The Astrological Age of Aquarius
On December 21, 2020 we will have a Great Conjunction at 0° of Aquarius. A Great Conjunction is when the planetary giants Jupiter and Saturn conjunct or occupy the same degree in the sky. I’ll note here that the constellations and the zodiac wheel are not exactly congruent in the tropical system which is the one I use, so this Great Conjunction will be in the constellation of Capricorn if you look at it in the sky. This will be visible as a new “Star of Bethlehem.”
Astrological ages are approximately 2000 years and mark each of the 12 divisions of the zodiac. Why is this even a thing? Well, there is something bigger going on here. The Earth’s Celestial Pole is the imaginary extension of the Earth’s axis of rotation where it crosses the celestial sphere. This pole rotates in a circular motion and returns to its starting point every 25,000 – 26,000 years. The “ages” are a way to track the Celestial Pole’s movement in a manageable way, and the study of the ages offers fascinating truths as we study human evolution. There are also smaller 20 year cycles marked by Great Conjunctions that describe human events and focus even more, but I’ll talk more about that later.
In the year 7 BCE there was a Great Conjunction in Pisces that was exact several times throughout the year. This would’ve been a very bright “star” visible starting from spring and lasting through winter. It’s no mistake that the fish is one of the symbols of Jesus, as the symbol for Pisces is 2 fishes swimming in opposite directions. This is even more interesting when we consider the different spiritual approach Jesus brought when compared to the teachings of the Old Testament. Symbolically, Jesus was swimming in opposite spiritual waters as compared to the Age of Aries.
The Code of Hammurabi, which was one of the earliest set of written laws that we know of, showcases some of the energies of the Age of Aries perfectly. Aries energy is fiery, self-focused, impulsive, and sometimes aggressive. An eye for an eye comes from the Code of Hammurabi, yet hidden in those laws were the first hints of the concept of “innocent until proven guilty.” As the balancing energy of Aries, Libra energies of justice and cooperation show up here. Wars, conquest, and independence were loud themes and in stark contrast from the previous age of Taurus where humanity organized into farming communities and reaped the spoils of the earth.
There are different ideas about when the Age of Aquarius actually begins, did begin, or will begin. Some astrologers pose we are already in it, some feel we are one the brink of it now, some think it's still 150 years away. Whenever it officially begins, my hope is that this Great Conjunction hints that we will begin to build some new benefic structures in our societies. I’m not saying it’s about aliens, but it’s probably about ALIENS. Hahahah I kid. Kinda. Aquarius energy is about genius inventions, humanitarianism, building strong communities, actually helping one another for the greater good, and astrology! It’s about everyone having the same rights and same value. Racism, homophobia, transphobia, and bigotry of all forms will have no place in the Age of Aquarius.
Many an old-ass way of thinking will go extinct. Perhaps we will discover or release some incredible medical breakthroughs that will extend our lives so we can be a part of this new age for longer.
